In the age of information technology, the best gift is the advent of online colleges spreading the light of knowledge and education far and wide. Now everyone has rigorous routine and there is hardly any time or spirit left for going to college again in pursuit of higher education. The Internet makes it possible now to turn learning into a continuous and never ending process. Education is now as personal as the personal computer with hundreds of colleges across America, Europe, Australia and Asia offering distant learning through Internet. There is a whole new community of people pursuing higher education in online colleges, upgrading their skills, qualifications and prospects of job or business.
Education is not the privilege of a few any more. In a short duration of time and with very basic effort and at minimal expense, any person of any age can improve one’s qualification and profile by enrolling to a college online. There are courses ranging from management to pharmacology and from art design to social work or public relations that can be completed online. The online colleges are accredited and the degrees they award are recognized worldwide.
The attempt of these cyber institutions is to give you as much as possible, the benefit and even the environment of a live campus. There will be regular feeds of study material and even updates that will give the candidate a sense of belonging and the feel of being part of a campus as there is scope for interaction and intermingling with fellow students and faculties as you socialize on a live campus as a regular college student. Internet, has given a major impetus of distance learning programs. According to an estimate, at any given time there are over 2 million students enrolled in online colleges across the world. As times change, no college remains untouched by the trend and more than 80 per cent of the most reputed colleges of the world are now running online courses.
The United States Distance Learning Association has endorsed most of the programs of education running online, as equally beneficial as regular or traditional programs and it has been found that students of online colleges are positive and upbeat about the learning process. The environment in distance learning will be much the same as in a traditional classroom, the difference being that there will be some convenient alterations made in the routine. The lecture may not be interpersonal but would be there, you may not personally hand over your assignment to your instructor, but it would feel quite the same and the exam, though not written with pen or pencil on paper, would still be a strict regime.
In an online college you are attending the lectures peruse according to your convenience, so there are tools like the instructors’ e-mail, chat rooms and bulletin boards that would help you catch up with the lesson/lecture of the day. There might even be streaming audiovisual recordings of the lecture, followed by quiz, puzzles, etc to make you familiar with the topic or subject taught.
